Learn More About
Dr. Joseph Pittman, or as we say, Dr. P, was born in the great state of North Carolina. He grew up in the country with corn fields, swimming ponds and BBQ (vinegar style of course) just outside of Greenville in a family of seven. As a teenager, Dr. Pittman moved to Ohio. He did well in STEM classes, scoring a perfect on the SAT math, and also found he really enjoyed design and art. He followed his father’s footsteps into engineering since that seemed to be the best field for combining his design interests and analytical skills. He attended The Ohio State University, graduating summa cum laude with honors in mechanical engineering.
During college, he interned with Crest Toothpaste and became interested in brand management and oral care, and ultimately decided to attend dental school. Dentistry, even more so than engineering, fit his interests and skills by blending science, art, clinical care and business management. In dental school, Dr. Pittman received a full-ride scholarship for academic excellence and community involvement. He was president of his class, graduated salutatorian, received multiple research awards and, most excitingly, went to four more seasons of Buckeye football!
Choosing Orthodontics
Dr. Pittman had his eyes on the field of orthodontics when he first started dental school. He was thrilled to match at the University of North Carolina, one of the most prestigious orthodontic programs in the world. It was a great homecoming, although due to his time in the Midwest, he was a bit changed; he now knew how to drive in the snow, preferred half-sweet tea, and had met his wonderful wife, Robin. During his residency, Dr. Pittman learned from some of the best professors in the Orthodontic field. He had the opportunity to learn about a wide range of appliances and treatment approaches including: clear braces, aligners, Damon, Invisalign, orthognathic surgery, cleft lip/palate, habit appliances and impacted canines.
Dr. Pittman loves orthodontics, but if you ask his friends and family, you’ll find he has many passions. Dr. Pittman is enthusiastic about life and always ready to “make things happen”. He loves to travel, and even lived in both Germany and Peru. He especially enjoys combining his love for travel with his passion for missions where he has fond memories serving in Uganda and Peru as a dental provider. He enjoys giving back to the dental community and serves as a board member of the North Carolina Association of Orthodontists. He also founded and serves as president of the Fuquay Study Club and Triangle Ortho Club. He is also very involved with his local church. He loves the great outdoors and anything athletic. He also enjoys many types of art, such as piano, singing, painting, pottery and digital design. You’ll even see some of his work at the office!
All About Family
If you’re at our office long, you’ll probably hear Dr. Pittman talk about his family. His beautiful wife Robin grew up in Columbus, Ohio. Fortunately, she has fallen in love with the area and you may even hear her say y’all from time to time! She’s an occupational therapist and a phenomenal runner, having completed both the Boston and New York Marathons. If you want to see Dr. Pittman’s eyes light up, ask him about his children, Juna Rae, Dietrich, Broxton, Veleska and Thane. Dr. Pittman comes off as laidback and jovial but is determined and a bit of a perfectionist. Everyone can agree that Dr. Pittman’s most important quality is his love for people. He looks forward to getting to know you at your next visit!
