Gum Contouring
Gum Contouring
The most esthetic smiles have teeth that fill in the frame of the smile, meaning the upper incisors fill in from the top lip to the bottom lip. Sometimes the teeth are shortened by enlarged gums, which can occur naturally or can develop during orthodontic treatment. Enlarged gums can also make the smile appear gummy. Enlarged gums can easily be corrected with a soft-tissue laser. Soft-tissue lasers are very effective and comfortable for this procedure. Often the patient only requires topical anesthetic. The laser cauterizes the tissue during the procedure so there is no bleeding or need for stitches. Additionally, there is minimal scabbing, so the patient’s smile is much improved immediately after the procedure. Some patients require treatment on just a few teeth while others require the whole arch. Depending on the amount of gingival overgrowth, dental insurance may cover this procedure. This procedure can massively improve the esthetics of a smile!
