Self-Ligating Brackets
Self-Ligating Brackets
There are many types of brackets with a variety of features. One defining characteristic is self-ligating versus non self-ligating brackets. A self-ligating bracket has a mechanism in which a clip or door closes to hold the wire into the bracket, versus the traditional style where an elastic ring or steel tie is used. Self-ligating brackets are a premium bracket style that offer a variety of benefits for patients. With self-ligating technology, the color rings are optional. For patients that don't care about colors on their brackets or for clear bracket patients who do not want to worry about the elastic rings staining during treatment, this option is great! Additionally, the self-ligating clip does not wear out overtime like an elastic thread so we can expect longer activation of the wire. This allows the patient to go a longer time between appointment intervals while still achieving the same progress. Early in orthodontic treatment when the patient’s teeth often need significant movement, a self-ligating bracket system reduces friction, improving tooth movement. Don’t worry though, we do place colors for patients that are excited to accessorize!
